2025 IDEA Grant Recipients

These grants are intended to support programs and events with a focus on retaining and supporting a diverse workforce in orthopaedic surgery within U.S. academic centers.

  • Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center Department of Orthopaedic Surgery - $4,000
    • The grant will support visiting rotating medical students from under-represented demographic groups in orthopaedic surgery who would like to do an away sub-internship rotation at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.
  • Johns Hopkins University - $4,000
    • The Johns Hopkins Orthopaedic Surgery Diversity Scholarship Program is awarded to visiting medical students who are women or members of underrepresented minority groups. These students will participate in a one-month sub-internship in the Orthopaedic Surgery Department at Johns Hopkins Hospital. During this rotation, each student is paired with both a faculty member and a resident mentor, who offer guidance, support, and professional development opportunities throughout the month.
  • New York University of Orthopaedics - $24,000
    • The grant will support a multi-center collaboration to promote advanced education, collaboration, and cross-practice sharing between the inaugural institutional host sites: New York University Orthopaedics, Duke Orthopaedics, and Cedars-Sinai Orthopaedics. The program will support emerging leaders in the field of health equity and diversity by providing them with opportunities to learn from a diverse array of health systems and leaders through on-site visits, supported collaborations, and longitudinal education. With this experience, the fellows will increase their proficiency in the execution of health equity initiatives within their communities and beyond.
  • Temple University Hospital - $4,000
    • The grant will fund an annual scholarship that will assist underrepresented visiting fourth year medical students who identify as black, Latino, women, and LGBTQ+, who are in good standing at LCME-accredited United States medical schools, and who are United States citizens. This program will fund visiting students between July and October.
  • Trustees of Tufts College (dba Tufts University) - $4,000
    • The Alliance for Diversity and Equity in Orthopaedic Surgery (ADEOS) is an interest group for medical students at Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM).The group will use the grant to support the Visiting Scholars Fund that will invite current practitioners and visiting professors to lead workshops and discuss DEI in the field with students, residents, and faculty to foster a more inclusive environment at TUSM, thus serving to promote engagement and retention among racially and ethnically underrepresented students interested in orthopaedic surgery.
  • Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine - $3,440
    • This grant will support the implementation of a monthly virtual fireside chat series with women orthopaedic surgery leaders from around the country. Each month, organizers will invite female resident and fellow trainees, medical students interested in orthopaedic surgery, and women faculty members to a 1-hour session with a virtual guest speaker. The sessions will include intentional space for discussion, skills development, and relationship-building.
