Diversity & AAOS

As the demographic face of our nation changes, the orthopaedic community is evolving to reflect and adapt to these critical shifts in the landscape. Recognizing the value and strength inherent in our diverse population is a first step.

Diversity as an AAOS Strategic Goal

The AAOS respects the lives of every person regardless of race, religion, gender, creed, or sexual orientation, and will continue to support its members and the public. In December 2018, the AAOS Board of Directors approved a new five-year Strategic Plan that included diversity as a strategic goal.

The Diversity Advisory Board (DAB) was established by AAOS to serve as a resource for the Academy in its efforts to (1) create a culture within the AAOS community that encourages and values diversity; (2) build both a membership and a leadership of AAOS that are reflective of the communities that we represent, study, and care for.

AAOS and its DAB are working to execute a variety of new initiatives focused on leader recruitment, selection, retention, and culture. As part of the selection metric, which focuses on purposeful and transparent selection for governance and leadership positions, AAOS developed a Governance Diversity Report.

Progress on achieving the goal of increasing diversity among the AAOS volunteer structure is tracked through the AAOS Diversity Dashboard.

A Message from the President of the J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society

On June 12, 2020, Eric Ward Carson, MD, FAAOS, President of the J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society (JRGOS), shared a personal and powerful message about the gravity of current events in the United States.

"As the leader of the JRGOS, I propose we raise our voices, mobilize, and be part of the solution to these racial and healthcare inequities and work hand in hand with the AAOS leadership to bring about the necessary change."
