Clinical Practice Guideline

Published March 11, 2019

This clinical practice guideline addresses interventions employed to mitigate the risk for periprosthetic joint infection in primary hip and knee arthroplasty and explores the tools available to diagnose PJI. This guideline does not address the prevention or diagnosis of superficial infections nor is it intended to address the treatment of patients with confirmed PJI of the hip or knee.

Clinical practice guidelines (CPG) provide evidence-based recommendations for current orthopaedic diagnostic, treatment, and postoperative procedures. Multdisciplinary clinician work groups and AAOS staff work together to synthesize published research with the aim of providing a transparent and robust summary of the research findings for a particular orthopaedic disease topic.

Hip and Knee Arthroplasty and Surgical Risk Reduction Toolkits

The Surgical Risk Reduction and Total Hip and Total Knee Arthroplasy Toolkits are a collection of related information, resources, and tools to assist AAOS members in making informed practice decisions based on evidence-based recommendations and/or practice standards. The information provided compiles advocacy, practice management, and quality improvement resources while including clinical and patient education.
