How has the AAOS helped you during residency?
The AAOS provides educational resources that I frequently use to learn and review orthopaedic topics. I also use the Orthopaedic Video Theater to learn more about relevant topics on my rotations or prepare for upcoming cases. Access to JAAOS also allows me to read about trending topics and new research.
As a Resident Member, which AAOS resources do you use most and why?
My residency program uses Restudy as part of our annual review for OITE. I have recently supplemented this with ROCK as a great way to review and learn. The format is easy to read and highlights the must-know facts on each of the topics. ROCK often provides access to the corresponding OKU chapter which I find very helpful.
What’s the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?
The best way to survive is teamwork: foster good relationships with colleagues, nurses, and other healthcare staff. I can’t say I remember who first mentioned this to me, but it has been emphasized throughout my medical training and it is so true. It is easy to work hard with people you get along with.
What’s your go-to productivity trick?
Find a dedicated quiet space, coffee, and a nice view.
What’s one thing you’re currently trying to make a habit?
Healthy lifestyle - eating habits, gym, cardio. Unfortunately, the resident schedule often makes it difficult to prioritize your health. Even if I don’t have as much time as I would like, I am trying to make it a habit to do one thing daily to promote my health.
What hobbies do you enjoy in your spare time?
Cheering on my Miami Hurricanes, Miami Heat, Inter Miami, Miami Dolphins (you guessed it, anything Miami). I also enjoy traveling with my fiancé (shout out to Al), walking my dog Paco, grilling the perfect steak, and mowing my lawn on Sunday morning.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself that not many people know?
I was born in Costa Rica, and I am a proud immigrant.¡Pura Vida!
