Why did you join AAOS?
As a medical student pursuing a career in orthopaedic surgery, joining AAOS was a natural and strategic step in my professional development. The decision was motivated by a combination of personal ambition, educational opportunity, and a desire to be part of an incredible community that is dedicated to advancing the field and providing optimal patient care. My AAOS membership provides me with access to invaluable educational resources and numerous opportunities for networking and mentorship, which are crucial for medical students in my shoes. Through conferences, workshops, and online platforms, I have the opportunity to interact with established orthopedic surgeons who provide valuable insights into the day-to-day realities of orthopedic practice, as well as guidance on navigating the complex pathway to residency and beyond. I look forward to engaging with the Academy throughout my medical education and career, and I am confident that it will continue to shape and support my professional journey.
What are you looking forward to most about AAOS?
I'm most excited about the opportunity to connect with experienced surgeons and fellow medical students who share my passion for orthopaedics!
What interested you about orthopaedics?
Orthopaedics is the perfect combination of hands-on work, problem solving, and the ability to make drastic improvements in patients' lives. In my experience, orthopaedic patients are not only highly motivated to improve their quality of life, but the post-operative outcomes of orthopaedic procedures are incredible. This field allows patients to get back to how they functioned prior to an acute or chronic injury, with many patients experiencing better mobility compared to their pre-injury state! Additionally, the field’s wide range of specialties—ranging from trauma to sports medicine to joint replacement—offers diverse opportunities for growth and specialization, making orthopedics an exciting career path.
What is the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?
The best advice I’ve ever received came from my dad, who told me, "Don't hesitate to try something because you're afraid of failing." This wisdom has stayed with me throughout my journey, from applying to medical school as an undergraduate to now, as a medical student applying to orthopedic surgery residency programs.
What's one thing you're currently trying to make a habit?
One habit I'm focusing on is starting each day by listing three things I'm grateful for. It helps set a positive tone for the day and serves as a reminder of the wonderful people and opportunities in my life.
What hobbies do you enjoy in your spare time?
In my spare time, I enjoy planning hiking trips with my dad (my #1 hiking buddy), weightlifting, listening to country music, exploring new restaurants, and spending time with my dogs—Lola, a Boston Terrier, and Ignatius, a French Bulldog.
