How has the AAOS helped you throughout your career?
The AAOS has helped me tremendously over the years mainly by providing an immense information base in the form of journal articles and webinars to help me stay current with orthopaedic best practices and advances in orthopaedic care. It also serves as a solid base to reinforce my current knowledge base and practice of orthopaedics and the teaching of medical students and residents.
As an International Member, which AAOS resources do you use most and why?
JAAOS - Easy online access provides easy retrieval of articles with information that I can use in planning surgery and teaching orthopaedic residents and medical students.
What’s the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?
"Take the time you need to do an operation correctly the first time... dealing with complications from improperly done surgery can be miserable/a nightmare.” Dr. Steve Mullings, consultant orthopaedic surgeon and Head of the department of orthopaedics, Mandeville Regional Hospital, colleague, and friend. This advice was given to me during my orthopaedic residency program when he was my senior.
What’s your go-to productivity trick?
No trick just practical. Getting some rest. This may be in the form of a power nap wherever I am. I always feel rejuvenated afterward with clearer thoughts and increased energy levels to execute the relevant tasks at hand.
What’s one thing you’re currently trying to make a habit?
Doing my paperwork such as medical reports and office stuff on a regular basis i.e. at least one day out of each week to prevent stuff from piling up.
What hobbies do you enjoy in your spare time?
Playing Badminton or squash, working out in the gym (Mainly lifting weights), volunteer coaching throwing events to high school kids, cooking a variety of foods for family, friends, and various other persons and most recently baking.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself that not many people know?
I qualified as a lifeguard when I was 13 years old (I was a big kid 6' 3" 185 lbs.) Came in handy during residency when I had to give mouth to mouth resuscitation to a student who had "drowned" at the university pool shortly after I had finished swimming and the lifeguards present were not doing an appropriate job resuscitating him so I had to step in and take over to get the student breathing again before moving him to the emergency room at the University Hospital. (Long story)
I won a national gold medal for speech (Reciting poetry and prose) when I was in high school.
