What AAOS Resources do you use and why?
I always peruse the AAOS NOW as well as the JAAOS, and recently took the OKU test to keep CME. These resources are incredible, and helped me stay up to date on all the recent literature.
If you were mentoring a new member, what would you advise?
First off, know your anatomy inside and out. Know the personality and expectations of your patient as well as the personality of the fracture. Pay close attention to long-range outcomes. Experience and time will allow you to know what will work, what might work, and what probably won’t work. And acknowledge the existence and value of others, especially those working for you, and around you, whatever their position. Finally, find and culture one interest outside of medicine, keep your family happy, and live below your means for the first 10 years. And occasionally you may miss your son’s basketball game due to a dislocated hip in the ER!
What aspect of retirement surprised you the most?
The sudden, nearly complete drop in responsibility was expected but difficult at first. Involvement in several community organizations and volunteering at a free clinic has helped. Definitely sleeping more.
What hobbies do you enjoy in your spare time?
I love playing my guitar, an old friend, and learning new classical pieces. Cycling is also another passion of mine. I also have 2 or 3 non-medical books going at the same time. There is also much more time to visit family and friends. Sunsets last much longer! Weekend trips on a whim.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself that not many people know?
After college, I worked for several years as a teacher for learning-disabled and other handicapped children. But after having knee surgery I was so impressed with the Orthopedist that my life completely changed course. Rest in peace, William Mack Jackson, MD.
