As an Emeritus Member, which AAOS resources do you use most and why?
I use the monthly webinar offerings to gain CME credits and also to keep up with the latest research and techniques in our field. I see patients 1-2 mornings per week and also teach our primary care sports medicine fellows. Working 5-8 hours per week is terrific. Being able to still see patients in the field I love is truly a blessing. Always happy to do it.

If you were mentoring a new member, what important advice would you give them as they progress in their career?
If I was mentoring a new member, I would communicate they are embarking on a career in the best specialty of medicine. Read a lot, attend meetings enthusiastically, and try to get better at orthopaedics every day. Listen to your patients. They will tell you their diagnosis. No computer work when interviewing patients. Do surgery efficiently but never in a hurry. It is so enjoyable.

What aspect of retirement surprised you the most?
Retirement is fun but I do miss colleagues in surgery. I have lessened my workload gradually so no big surprises in my mostly retired state.

What hobbies do you enjoy in your spare time?
I play a fair amount of golf, work out, and travel extensively with my wife Linda. We see our kids and grandkids frequently.

I provide medical care at USGA golf tournaments. Last year,  I covered Women's US Open at Pebble Beach. I will be in Pennsylvania at the end of May this year for the same event. Try not to cover more than 2 events per year as I do no want it to turn into a full time “job”. I take care of the professional golfers and their caddies.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself that not many people know?
Not so little known fact about me. I am an amateur pizzaiolo.  🍕🍕
