As an Emeritus Member, which AAOS resources do you use most and why?
The AAOS member newsletter and the JAAOS to follow what is happening and be able to give advice to family and friends.
If you were mentoring a new member, what important advice would you give them as they progress in their career?
Always remember the 3 A’s. Affable, Available and Accountable. Be nice to everyone, be available to your family, your community, your patients but most importantly to yourself. Be accountable to yourself in all things. That balance is key. Find someone to mentor. You live through what you teach to others.
What aspect of retirement surprised you the most?
The aspect of retirement that has surprised me the most is the perception of the passage of time. It seems to have sped up. The thing that also surprises me is how much I miss teaching medical students and residents.
What hobbies do you enjoy in your spare time?
I ride my horse, ballroom dance, exercise, and still teach a Culinary Medicine program as well as help manage a medically tailored food delivery service. I am finally catching up on all the books I didn't get to read as my three girls were growing up. I also love to cook.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself that not many people know?
Fun fact: I am the only orthopedic surgeon certified in Culinary Medicine. I received my certification 8 years ago from the American College of Culinary Medicine.
