How has the AAOS helped you throughout your career?
AAOS has been an outstanding source for up-to-date and evidence-based medicine. This allows me to stay up to date with current treatment practices and guidelines that help me provide excellent patient care and provide patient information/education to my patients.
As an Allied member, which AAOS resources do you use most and why?
I use the online resources ( Webinars and Orthopedic Video Theater). The OrthoInfo patient education handouts are a great resource to provide to my patients. I enjoy reading the AAOS Now monthly magazine. I use the CME resources to help me obtain my CME credits. And of course, attending the AAOS Annual Meeting, which always provides outstanding educational information.
What’s the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?
Remember, not every day is a good day, but there is something good in every day. Treat patients with respect, dignity, compassion, and empathy. Always remember to smile and connect with patients on a personal level. (From one of my ortho docs in the Navy).
What’s your go-to productivity trick?
My go-to productivity trick is instead of patient’s sitting in the waiting room for x-rays in our office. I will have my MA put the patient in the examination room. This way I can see the patient, do my exam, and talk with them while they are waiting on the x-rays. This saves me a considerable amount of time. I also use MModal speech dictation to dictate my notes.
What’s one thing you’re currently trying to make a habit?
The one thing that I am trying to make a habit of is, taking care of my mental and physical well-being. As an orthopedic PA, I can see 23-26 patients in a day in clinic on top of being on-call, rounding, and being in surgery. This can be physically and mentally taxing. I do my best to leave work at work and not take it home with me. I am a strong advocate of using my vacation days and my one day off each week to recharge, be with my family and decompress. I believe this helps decrease fatigue in both the body and mind.
What hobbies do you enjoy in your spare time?
I enjoy working out, playing bingo and watching movies with my wife, traveling, spending time with my family, watching football and playing fantasy football, and spending time with our Shih Tzu, Koa.
