How has the AAOS helped you throughout your career?
I have always enjoyed teaching and I have been able to attend since I was a resident. Early on in my career I had the opportunity to co-Chair a series of regional review courses and spent time at the Learning Center primarily as faculty at wrist, elbow, should, and soft tissue endoscopy courses. The Learning Center is truly unique and it has been a privilege for me to be asked to be on the faculty at these outstanding courses.

As an Active Fellow Member, which AAOS resources do you use most and why?
I use billing and coding services such as Code-X, and regularly read JAAOS and AAOS Now. I also attend and often participate in the AAOS Annual Meeting and specialty day.

What’s the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?
Jim Herndon told me 10 years into my career that I needed to stop doing General Orthopaedics and focus on Surgery of the Hand and Upper Extremity. My career took off and I have never looked back.

What’s your go-to productivity trick?
I love what I do, ever since I was an intern. When I started in practice, I covered Hand and Microsurgery each night I was on call. A strong work ethic has made me productive.  I also love teaching and all aspects of medical education.  I worked my way from junior faculty up through the ranks to become program director and eventually department chairman.  I remain Program Director of the Hand Fellowship at UPMC Hamot.

What’s one thing you’re currently trying to make a habit?
I am over 70 and trying to spend more time with my family.  To this end I no longer do a Friday clinic.

What hobbies do you enjoy in your spare time?
Golf, sailing, gardening, Antique and Classic cars, and learning more about cuisine so I can spend more time cooking with my wife.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself that not many people know?
I was Honorable Mention All-State Football my Senior year in High School.
