How has the AAOS helped you throughout your career?
The AAOS has given me a place to learn, network, and grow as an orthopaedic surgeon. As a resident, I used the Yellow Journal to prepare for cases and increase my knowledge base. The AAOS course in preparation for my board examination was also invaluable. At the Annual Meeting, I have had the opportunity to engage with new mentors and maintain relationships with others.
As an Active Fellow Member, which AAOS resources do you use most and why?
To stay up to date on new practices, I invest in the OKU series for Trauma as well as the many journals that are offered through our membership. In addition, I use the self-assessment exams to continue to learn and make sure I am providing my patients with the best care possible.
What’s the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from?
The best advice I was ever given was to treat every patient as if they were a family member. If that is what you would want for your relative, then that is what you should do for your patient. One of my co-residents said this to me and it has stuck.
What’s your go-to productivity trick?
Pick projects that you are passionate about so that you enjoy spending your time working on them. Mentoring and teaching is an important part of my career. Therefore, when I have an interesting case or come across a resource that has helped me I keep it in a file. That way I don't have to search for materials when asked to prepare lectures or when teaching a topic to residents or medical students.
What’s one thing you’re currently trying to make a habit?
Being more intentional in the activities I participate in. When you start out, the advice most new attendings are told is to say yes to every opportunity. Now that I have found the spaces I find the most fulfillment I am working on choosing to dedicate my time to those endeavors.
What hobbies do you enjoy in your spare time?
Running, traveling, and anything Disney.
