The Rise of Open Access Journals Is Marred by Predatory Journals
As with patients’ online “research” of their conditions and treatment options, “the rise of predatory journals in [the] internet era gave birth [to] another problem of searching relevant authentic information in a vast sea of heavily contaminated, fake, plagiarized, or manipulated data in the name of biomedical researches,” according to an article by Sharma and Verma.

AAOS Welcomes the Republic of Korea as 2019 Guest Nation
Established in 1956 with just nine physicians, KOA currently has a thriving membership of more than 8,000. Uniting 24 subspecialty societies, it is one of the largest medical associations in the Republic of Korea. KOA supports the orthopaedic profession and patient health through multiple educational avenues. It hosts two annual Congresses in April and October and holds several courses and meetings throughout the year.

Recognizing Physician Burnout and Incorporating Joy into Practice
Changes in health care have increased physician burnout. When physician well-being is suboptimal, patient care can suffer. During a symposium, titled “Professional Well-being and Burn-out” at the AAOS Fall Meeting in San Antonio, Texas, two speakers provided insights to improve work environments, reengage physicians, and promote the highest levels of patient care. ABOS Launches Web-based ‘Open Book’ MOC Pathway
With the new year comes the implementation of the new Knowledge Assessment pathway in Maintenance of Certification (MOC) from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). The Web-based Longitudinal Assessment (ABOS WLA) program allows currently ABOS Board-Certified orthopaedic surgeons (Diplomates) to pursue and fulfill MOC Part III requirements through completion of a single annual assessment using a web-based interface to answer questions on a computer or laptop.

Tony Priore Joins AAOS as Chief Marketing Officer
The Academy recently announced Tony Priore as the organization’s new chief marketing officer. Mr. Priore joins AAOS after five years as chief marketing officer at the Residential Real Estate Council (RRC), the largest affiliate of the National Association of REALTORS®. Prior to RRC, Mr. Priore held senior marketing positions at several distinguished organizations, including Leo Burnett, DDB Worldwide, Citibank, and Experian Marketing Services.

Healthcare Profession Mourns the Loss of Long-time Director of NIAMS
It is with a profoundly heavy heart that I share the sad news that we have lost one of our most beloved leaders at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Stephen I. Katz, MD, PhD, the long-time director of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), died on Dec. 20, 2018, after suffering a catastrophic stroke. I am still reeling from this sudden, tragic turn of events.

Michael F. Schafer, MD, Remembered as a ‘Great Doctor and a Great Human Being’
If you want to know the true legacy left by Michael F. Schafer, MD, you need only look to the remembrances posted to his memorial page at www.tributes.com. There are words of admiration and affection from many fellow orthopaedic surgeons who held him in high esteem—as a mentor early in their careers, as a colleague, and as a friend. There are also tributes from others in his professional orbit—nurses, a radiology technician—and from loving friends and family members.
