New Appropriate Use Criteria Cover Carpal Tunnel, SMOAK
The Academy Board of Directors in December approved release of two new sets of Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC), covering Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) and Surgical Management of Osteoarthritis of the Knee (SMOAK). As with previously issued AUC, these new app-based resources (www.aaos.org/auc) provide clinicians with an algorithm-style tool for choosing management pathways for patients with these conditions.

AJRR Expands TJA Data Collection
Each year, the American Joint Replacement Registry (AJRR) releases its Annual Report on Hip and Knee Arthroplasty Data at the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) Annual Meeting. The AJRR published and distributed its 2016 report on Friday, Nov. 11, at the AAHKS meeting in Dallas. The AJRR has seen significant growth in the past year, making the report the most comprehensive representation of data from an American orthopaedic registry to date.

Lessons in Saying "No"

As orthopaedic surgeons, we are constantly asked to "volunteer" for a committee or to cover an on-call day for a colleague. And because we know that someday we may be asking a colleague to serve with us or to cover our on-call day, we almost always say "yes." Yet the many demands in our lives make it impossible for us to always acquiesce.

ICLs Provide Instruction You Can Use
Instructional Course Lectures (ICLs) at the AAOS Annual Meeting provide expert clinical instruction attendees can take home and put to use. The selections for the 2017 Annual Meeting are expansive, with a vast array of educational offerings and 35.5 continuing medical education (CME) credits available to be earned, said chair of the Central Instructional Courses Committee.

Publisher Steve Forbes to Speak at AAOS Annual Meeting
Business leader and former presidential candidate Steve Forbes has been selected as the presidential guest speaker for the 2017 AAOS Annual Meeting. Mr. Forbes is chair and editor-in-chief of Forbes Media, which publishes Forbes magazine in the United States as well as international editions such as Forbes Europe and Forbes Asia. He stepped into the national spotlight in 1996 and 2000, when he campaigned to become the Republican nominee for president of the United States. Mr.

Digital newsletters containing JAAOS content focused on various subspecialty areas—such as spine care, as shown here—are now available from the AAOS at no charge to members. The newsletters are sent at no charge to AAOS members based on self-selected interest areas. Should a member not wish to receive a newsletter, there is a simple one-click opt-out function.

Are You an Achievement Award Winner?
The Achievement Award is the Academy's way of saying "Thanks" for outstanding contributions to the profession of orthopaedic surgery. This award recognizes the active volunteer involvement by Academy members both in AAOS programs and elsewhere in orthopaedics. Documentation of activities is the key to the program. Members' volunteer activities with the Academy have been recorded by the AAOS since 2005 from its database of management information.

Remembering John J. Gartland, MD
A giant in the field of orthopaedic surgery, died of heart failure on Nov. 21, 2016. He was 98 years old. Dr. Gartland was an internationally respected orthopaedic surgeon, scholar, and educator. He was also a highly valued member of the AAOS as well as the Thomas Jefferson University family. A 1944 graduate of Jefferson Medical College (now Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University), Dr. Gartland served for 2 years in the U.S.

AAOS Holds Trauma Conclave
With more than 1.3 billion people, India is the world's second most populous country. It also has a high rate of trauma injuries and deaths, many of which are the result of traffic accidents. According to India's Ministry of Home Affairs' National Crime Records Bureau, one serious traffic accident occurs every minute and 16 people die on Indian roads every hour.
