On Sept. 8, 2015, the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) submitted comments to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on two important proposed rules that address payment policies under Medicare. In both cases, the AAOS recommended significant changes to address concerns by the orthopaedic community about the impact of the proposed rules.

The August issue of AAOS Now included a great spread on the new Orthopaedic Learning Center (OLC, “New OLC Is Better than Ever”). But the pictures don’t do justice to this digital and modular learning platform for the 21st century, in my humble opinion. As its new name—the OLC Education and Conference Center—indicates, the OLC is moving beyond simply “learning.”

On Aug. 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Mississippi Gulf Coast, causing massive flooding that destroyed homes and left more than 1,000 people dead. As the storm plunged New Orleans into chaos, orthopaedic surgeons and other medical professionals evacuated patients from the city’s hospitals and provided desperately needed medical care. Fellows were asked to vote on six AAOS resolutions being considered under the 5-year review process. They also considered three Association bylaw amendments. At the time of the 2015 balloting, the AAOS had 23,802 active, emeritus, and inactive fellows eligible to vote. Ballots and information on voting were delivered by e-mail, fax, and U.S.

I know that I have been guilty—and I think every orthopaedic surgeon I know has also been guilty—of trying to do two things simultaneously. We all have talked on the phone, grabbed a bite to eat, drunk a morning cup of coffee, or engaged in activities other than the task of driving while behind the wheel. It seems harmless enough. These are small distractions, right?
