Avoid Contempt Prior to Investigation
Recently, several lists have been posted on the Internet and in print concerning monies paid to physicians, including orthopaedists. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) posted total Medicare payments, Medscape posted its 2014 “Physician Compensation Report,” medical device companies have been posting payments for several years, and “Sunshine Act” payments will soon be posted as well. The amount of compensation paid to different specialists is the most innocuous list.

MORE Award Winners Honored
The Academy celebrated another year of excellence in reporting on bone and joint health-related news stories at the 2014 Media Orthopaedic Reporting Excellence (MORE) Awards. The awards recognize the efforts of journalists who further the public’s understanding of orthopaedic-related health issues. Winners were invited to attend the National Orthopaedic Leadership Conference (NOLC) for an awards banquet on May 1, 2014, in Washington, D.C.

Developing a New Strategic Plan
In March 2013, the AAOS Board of Directors appointed a Strategic Planning Project Team, which I chaired. We were charged with developing and documenting the AAOS’ future strategic direction in a new multiyear strategic plan, “Vision 20/20.” We adopted the following strategies for achieving our charges: Assess current and anticipated forces of change on the environment.

Make-over Planned for AAOS.org
It’s been nearly 8 years since the current design of the AAOS website—www.aaos.org—was adopted. In web technology time, that places the website somewhere in the Middle Ages. Although the website has had some minor facelifts over the years (most recently in 2012) (Fig. 1), the basic design has remained unchanged—fairly static and text heavy, functional but not intuitive, useable but not necessarily user- or mobile device-friendly. All that is about to change.

Life Comes Full-Circle for Orthopaedic Surgeon from Ghana
Oheneba Boachie-Adjei, MD, will soon fulfill a long-awaited dream. Having built a career as an expert in spine reconstruction and the treatment of scoliosis and kyphosis at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City, Dr. Boachie-Adjei will leave the United States and return to his homeland of Ghana.
