Groundbreaking Orthopaedics

AAOS and its four equity partners—the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, and the Orthopaedic Learning Center (OLC)—have broken ground on a new headquarters building, expected to house more than 25 specialty orthopaedic organizations and a state-of-the art OLC.

CPG on OA Knee Treatment Disappoints

Regarding the latest clinical practice guideline (CPG) from the AAOS on treatment of osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee (“AAOS Approves Updated OA Knee CPG,” AAOS Now, June 2013), I have not been this disappointed since the chest surgeons insisted that I give all my arthroplasty patients blood thinners regardless of their underlying risk of pulmonary embolism. Eventually that was proven wrong, and I believe that eventually this latest CPG from the AAOS will be proven wrong as well.

Serving on the AAOS Evaluation Committee has been one of the most important professional roles I have ever had in my AAOS and academic careers. I began writing questions for the Orthopaedic In-training Examination (OITE) in 1999 when the Central Evaluation Committee was led by Stephen A. Albanese, MD. Four years later, I took over the chairmanship of a specialty evaluation subcommittee, and I then went on to chair the Central Evaluation Committee (2010–2013).

Members Endorse 9 AAOS Resolutions

AAOS fellows casting ballots were overwhelmingly supportive of all AAOS resolutions in 2013. Fellows were asked to vote on two new Academy resolutions as well as on two Academy resolutions being considered under the 5-year review process. They also considered five Association resolutions under the 5-year review process. At the time of the 2013 balloting, the AAOS had 23,403 active, emeritus, and inactive fellows eligible to vote.
