Looking Forward to a New Home for Orthopaedics

In September 2012, AAOS Now reported that the AAOS Board of Directors had approved plans to move forward with construction of a new orthopaedic headquarters building in Rosemont, Ill. As Joshua J. Jacobs, MD, wrote, “The new building will include an expanded Orthopaedic Learning Center (OLC), the latest in cutting-edge technology and energy-efficient systems, and headquarters space for more than 20 orthopaedic organizations.”

Perry Initiative Leads the Way to Orthopaedics

Experienced female orthopaedic surgeons who volunteer with the Perry Initiative, a nonprofit organization aimed at recruiting young women to orthopaedic surgery, do not mince words about the potential to succeed. “If anyone tells you that orthopaedics is not a great profession for women, do not listen to them,” advises Mary I. O’Connor, MD, chair of the department of orthopaedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, Fla. “It’s really a fabulous surgical field with lots of opportunities.”

When Dr. Jenni Buckley and I established our nonprofit organization, we didn’t consider any name other than the Perry Initiative, honoring my mentor and friend, Jacquelin Perry, MD, DSc, who died on March 11, 2013. During her decades-long career, Dr. Perry made immeasurable contributions to orthopaedics through groundbreaking research on the treatment of polio and other disorders and served as a mentor to countless men and women who followed in her footsteps, including me.

How to Make the Most of Every Media Encounter

Both sessions were led by one of the world’s leading global public relations firms, Weber Shandwick. Steve Johnson, senior vice president, conducted the training, which provided valuable insight on how orthopaedic surgeons can optimally engage the media to meet key professional goals.
