The Access-to-Care Conundrum
In my address to the fellowship at the AAOS Annual Meeting in February, I raised three issues that I believe are the major challenges facing our specialty—access to health care, the quality and value of orthopaedic surgery, and improving patient safety. In this and upcoming columns, I want to explore these issues in a little more depth. During the past 2 years, both my wife and I faced life-threatening illnesses.

Communication on a face-to-face basis involves three elements—words, tone of voice, and body language. But they don’t carry equal weight in communicating. Research has shown the following: Words (the literal meaning) account for 7 percent of the overall message.

World Opinion Forum Examines Orthopaedic Education
“Throughout history, the term ‘physician’ has really been equivalent to the term ‘scholarship,’” noted David C. Templeman, MD, a member of the AAOS International Committee, as he introduced the 2012 World Opinion Forum. “But recently, the educational paradigm, the way we do things, has changed. Students—from small children to medical residents—are no longer assimilating information in the same way we did. They’re using computers, multitasking, acquiring information from a multitude of sources.”

Teach, Travel, Learn Program Opens Doors
“Surgeons often have very reasonable concerns when considering participation in Orthopaedics Overseas (OO),” said Richard C. Fisher, MD, a retired orthopaedist who has been an OO volunteer for more than 30 years. “During the Teach, Travel, Learn course, we try to help them overcome those concerns and provide them with the tools they need to be successful when they go.” Dr. Fisher is the course chair for the 2012 Teach, Travel, Learn program.
