A 12-step program for politicians
S. Terry Canale, MD But after hearing and reading about all the shenanigans in Washington, D.C., over the past several months, I guess that there should be a 12-step program for “wayward” politicians to avoid “run-away” behaviors and hold them to all those promises they made while campaigning for office. If you’ve been reading these editorials all along, you realize that my political leanings are just to the right of Attila the Hun.

A touch of glass
Orthopaedic surgeon turns molten glass into works of art Like most surgeons, Bernard R. Bach Jr, MD, enjoys working with his hands. When he’s not performing orthopaedic surgery, he’s often at the glassblowing studio near his home, twirling a rod of molten glass into a beautiful work of art. “I’ve always had an interest in glass,” said Dr. Bach. “I started collecting pre-1880 antique patent medicine bottles when I was in my teens.

Second thoughts on recent editorial
The recent editorial, “I ain’t much, but I’m all I think about“ (May 2011) raises some very valid points about money, shared sacrifice, and lifestyle. In our upstate New York practice, my partners and I work very hard (we all perform 275 to 375 cases a year) but none of us seems to enjoy the trappings you suggest. The fanciest car in the practice is a new VW Jetta TDI—no Porsches, no Hummers. No one lives in a 5,000-square foot house.

Distracted driving and you
How you can make a difference in your community Distracted drivers injure 500,000 people each year. Distractions come in many different forms—from eating and texting to flipping through a map book while driving. This year, the AAOS is paying particular attention to the impact of distracted drivers, with billboards, bus wraps, print ads, radio spots, and television ads.

Residents praise Annual Meeting
“Not only the how, but also the why” “Overwhelming,” “unforgettable,” “exciting,” “a complete success”—residents attending the 2011 AAOS Annual Meeting in San Diego used these words to describe their experiences. And although many fellows might agree with their assessments, residents do bring a different perspective to the events. For Derek Amanatullah, MD, of the University of California–Davis, the meeting was both inspiring and challenging. As a first-time poster presenter, Dr.
