Promote the Academy's Safe Driving Message with Your Patients and Community
Nearly 8 years ago, the Academy launched the Decide to Drive distracted driving awareness campaign with the message: "Behind the wheel, there is no such thing as a small distraction." The campaign, in partnership with the Auto Alliance, has won numerous awards, received hundreds of media placements, and helped to spotlight the dangers of distracted driving.

In Search of Best Practices in Resident Education
Orthopaedic residency programs across the country use many of the same educational tools—such as cadaver labs, evaluations, and feedback—to teach residents. Despite the widespread use and importance of these methods, residency programs rarely communicate with each other. Without this dialogue, it is difficult for residencies to obtain comparative feedback or identify best education practices.

Anna Salt Troise Named Chief Education Strategist
The Academy recently welcomed Anna Salt Troise as the new chief education strategist. As a member of the AAOS executive team, Ms. Troise will direct all the Academy's education and peer-reviewed publishing activities, as well as its newly implemented strategy. "Anna is a proven business leader, manager, and innovative thinker with extensive experience in business and knowledge of the orthopaedic space," said AAOS CEO Thomas Arend Jr., Esq., CAE.

A New Take on Leadership in Orthopaedic Surgery
For more than 20 years, Dr. Tamara A. Scerpella's research efforts have focused on understanding the role of childhood and adolescent physical activity in the development of bone structure and strength. In 2008, she received a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Research Project Grant (RO1) for this work, which continues as the longest-running longitudinal study of its kind.

AAOS Board Considers Grievances filed under the Professional Compliance Program
At its meeting on Dec. 9, 2017, the AAOS Board of Directors considered two grievances filed under the AAOS Professional Compliance Program. The following actions were taken: In December 2016, a grievance alleging violations of the Standards of Professionalism on Orthopaedic Expert Opinion and Testimony was filed against Bradley W. Bruner, MD. The grievance arose from statements made by Dr. Bruner in an opinion letter to an attorney on a case involving a partial meniscectomy.

Which is Correct: OrthopEdics or OrthopAEdics?
After many years of debate, the question of which term, orthopEdics or orthopAEdics, is correct remains unanswered. The well-known English term OrthopAEdics, derived from the French term "Orthopédie," originated in 1741 by Nikolas Andry. It refers to the prevention of deformities in children, based on the Greek words "ορθός/orthos" (straight) and "paidion" or "paedion" (child). ΟrthopEdics (ΟρθοπEδική in Greek) is more inclusive of all age groups.
