AAOS—Advocacy and Action for Orthopaedic Surgeons
Since I took office as AAOS president at the Annual Meeting in San Diego, I’ve actually been spending a fair amount of time on the opposite coast—in Washington, D.C. It’s been a reminder that AAOS not only stands for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the educational 501(c)3 organization that is the premier educator of orthopaedic surgeons, it also stands for the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the 501(c)6 organization that advocates on behalf of patients and physicians.

New volunteer opportunities available After years of planning, disappointments, and fits and starts, a long-standing vision recently became reality with the establishment of the first official orthopaedic specialty training program in the West African nation of Ghana.

Two views on value of joint registries
The comments made by David G. Lewallen, MD, chair of the American Joint Replacement Registry (AJRR) board of directors, expressing enthusiasm about the “exciting year” the AJRR had (AAOS Now, March 2011), prompted me to share my reservations regarding the Registry. Despite the altruistic and sound rationale of the Registry, I believe the United States is not as yet ready for it for several reasons.

Rebuilding orthopaedics in Haiti
Volunteer support and equipment are still needed A year and a half after a catastrophic earthquake devastated Haiti, the tiny island nation is still struggling to rebuild. The 7.0-magnitude quake reduced the capital city of Port au Prince to rubble, knocked out all essential services, and killed more than 300,000 Haitians. Many survivors sustained serious orthopaedic injuries including crush injuries, compartment syndromes, and open fractures.

Chicago exhibits orthopaedic art
The lives of many caught up in the turmoil of war can change in an instant. Advances in battlefront medical aid and improvements in body armor are saving lives, even if soldiers and civilians are badly wounded. Those who survive need to rely as much on a resiliency of spirit as on medical intervention.
