Advocacy Council's John J. McGraw, MD, Appointed to HHS Pain Task Force
Earlier this year, AAOS Council on Advocacy member John J. McGraw, MD, was appointed to a 30-member Pain Management Best Practices Inter-Agency Task Force overseen by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). As the only surgeon on the task force, Dr. McGraw joins a diverse group of federal representatives and nonfederal individuals—from agency employees to medical professionals to patients to members of the addiction treatment community.

Speaking of Sports Medicine

Milestone: Academy Launches Shoulder and Elbow Registry
October is a milestone month for the Academy’s Registry Program, as it launches the Shoulder and Elbow Registry (SER). Building on the success of the American Joint Replacement Registry (AJRR)—the trailblazer data depository and resource for U.S. knee and hip arthroplasty that last year was reintegrated under the AAOS umbrella—SER will be previewed at the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) meeting Oct. 11–14 and make its formal debut at the Academy’s Fall Meeting Oct. 25–27.

New Orthopaedic Video Theater Coming to a Screen Near You
I cannot say it enough: The Academy is committed to providing more relevant educational content for our members, regardless of where they are in their careers. And it is something I thoroughly enjoy repeating. Case in point: the Academy’s Orthopaedic Video Theater (OVT). Let me explain … Surgical videos are valued resources for orthopaedic surgeons. From learning fundamentals as residents to considering emerging techniques for cases later in practice, videos enhance our learning.

An RCT of FAI Surgery Versus Physical Therapy: What Does It Really Teach Us?

Randomized, controlled trials (RCTs) represent the highest level of evidence and have a powerful ability to guide treatment recommendations. Although RCTs minimize selection bias, they are subject to other biases.

In 2015, Dave Grohl, frontman of the band the Foo Fighters and former drummer of Nirvana, broke his ankle when he fell from the stage while performing on tour in Sweden. Fellowship Match Update: What Applicants Need to Know
The orthopaedic fellowship match process began failing in the early 2000s. By 2007, it was in chaos and the match process for two subspecialties had dissolved. At that time, residents were forced to make fellowship decisions earlier in their residencies, often before they had rotated through all specialties. In some cases, residents had to accept a fellowship position on the spot or risk losing it to another candidate.
