AAOS-led Sports Liability Protection Bill Becomes Law
After more than five years of tireless advocacy by the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the Sports Medicine Licensure Clarity Act was signed into law on Oct. 5. The legislation, which AAOS has championed since its origin, provides legal protection for traveling team physicians and safeguards injured athletes’ timely access to healthcare professionals who know their medical histories best.

Registry Round-up: A Look Back at a Very Good Year
It’s been a year of milestones and trailblazing accomplishments for the AAOS registry program. In its 2018 annual report, having completed its reintegration within AAOS, the American Joint Replacement Registry (AJRR) tallied 1,186,955 procedures from 1,067 institutions from 2012 to 2017, establishing the AJRR as the largest orthopaedic registry by annual procedure count.

AAOS Hip Fracture Time-to-surgery Performance Measure Passes First CMS Test
Hip fractures in older patients have been an increasingly important health concern in the United States, as life expectancy in the country continues to rise. In April, AAOS published a performance measure (PM) to encourage hip fracture surgery within 48 hours of admission for patients 65 years of age or older. The PM stems from the AAOS evidence-based clinical practice guideline (CPG) on Management of Hip Fractures in the Elderly, which was published in 2014.

There Is No Room for Partisanship in Orthopaedics
Given the recent midterm elections and the upcoming presidential election in 2020, it is difficult to avoid political rhetoric and ignore the general population’s growing displeasure, regardless of your party affiliation. Mass media are zeroed in on topics calling for bipartisanship and challenging one-sided policies and divisiveness in general. Don’t worry; I’m not going to weigh in on the current state of U.S. politics, but I do see some similarities—both good and bad—with orthopaedics.

An Assessment of Culture in Orthopaedic Surgery
Culture in the workplace is the personality and character of our profession, reflecting the values, attitudes, and beliefs of orthopaedic surgeons. Recent high-profile cases have highlighted discrimination, bullying, sexual harassment, and harassment occurring in multiple professions, businesses, and organizations. The culture within the surgical community is particularly susceptible to harassment and discrimination, given the marked gender and racial disparities within the community.

AAOS Opinion on Ethics and Professionalism: Sexual Harassment
An AAOS Opinion on Ethics and Professionalism is an official AAOS statement dealing with an ethical issue, which offers aspirational advice on how an orthopaedic surgeon can best deal with a particular situation or circumstance. Developed through a consensus process by the AAOS Committee on Ethics and Outside Interests, an Opinion on Ethics and Professionalism is not a product of a systematic review.

AAOS Board Considers Grievances Filed Under the Professional Compliance Program
At its meeting on Sept. 15, 2018, the AAOS Board of Directors considered two grievances filed under the AAOS Professional Compliance Program. The following actions were taken: In July 2016, a grievance alleging violations of the Standards of Professionalism (SOP) on Orthopaedic Expert Opinion and Testimony was filed against Herbert I. Hermele, MD. The grievance was based on statements made by Dr. Hermele in his trial testimony.

AAOS Nominating Committee Announces 2019 Slate
