Fighting for Funding
Nearly one of every three Americans will have a musculoskeletal condition in his or her lifetime, costing an estimated $874 billion in annual treatment and lost wages. Yet the federal funding allocated to musculoskeletal research is disproportionate to the economic burden of orthopaedic diseases and disorders. For the past 14 years, the AAOS, in conjunction with multiple specialty societies, has assembled orthopaedic patients, physicians, and researchers in Washington, D.C.

In recent years, many orthopaedic surgeons have expressed strong dissatisfaction with the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) process of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS), and in particular its onerous high stakes exam process.

World Orthopaedic Leaders Learn to Fly
In conjunction with the 2017 AAOS Annual Meeting in San Diego, the presidents of seven orthopaedic associations—all members of the Carousel group—and their spouses had the opportunity to test their flying skills in military flight simulators at the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar.

Back in the Fast Lane
More than 2,000 athletes will compete at the 2017 Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA) World Masters Championships, July 14–30, in Budapest, Hungary. Among the swimmers will be Matthew E. Mitchell, MD, of Casper Orthopaedic Association in Casper, Wyo. In this his third FINA competition, Dr. Mitchell will be competing in the 50-meter, 100-meter, and 200-meter freestyle events. Dr. Mitchell began swimming at the age of 7, and like most children, he was also involved in other sports.

Profiles in Compassion: Orthopaedic Humanitarians
Members of the AAOS Communications Cabinet, who select the winner of the annual AAOS Humanitarian Award, have the opportunity to see the wide range of medical outreach activities in which AAOS members engage. Some AAOS members have established personal foundations; others devote their time and efforts to a specific mission; and still others participate in international rescue efforts.

Setting AAOS Now Straight
Regarding the recent AAOS Now article "Study: No Advantage to Liposomal Bupivacaine for TKA" (April 2017 issue) about work presented at the AAOS annual meeting by DeClaire et al, there appears to be a significant methodologic problem that likely resulted in a misleading outcome.

Readiness, Teamwork, and Navy Medicine
Navy orthopaedic surgeon Rear Admiral Bruce Gillingham, MD, served as commander of Navy Medicine West until his promotion to deputy chief, readiness and health directorate, US Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery. Combatting Opioid Misuse
As many of you know, the Academy recently launched a new public service advertisement (PSA) campaign on the dangers of opioid misuse. This campaign includes display and radio ads urging doctors and patients to exercise caution in prescribing and taking opioids. The campaign was distributed to hundreds of outdoor billboard/sign companies and radio stations across the United States.
