AAOS Board Approves AUC on Antibiotic Use for Dental Procedures
At its September meeting, the AAOS Board of Directors approved a suite of appropriate use criteria (AUC) providing guidance on when it may be appropriate to consider antibiotic administration prior to dental procedures in patients with replacement joint implants.

How Valuable Are Healthcare Quality Rankings?
In 2010, the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act required the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to create Physician Compare (www.medicare.gov/physiciancompare), a site that aims to "provide information for consumers to encourage informed healthcare decisions" and "create explicit incentives for physicians to maximize performance."

Honoring Our Military Veteran Members
On Nov. 11, Americans will once again observe Veterans Day, honoring the millions of men and women who have served in our country's armed forces throughout the world. This day is especially important for AAOS members who are veterans, or are currently serving and providing life-saving care to military personnel, their families, veterans, and civilians.

AAOS International Scholars Program Has Global Reach
Launched in 2002, the AAOS International Scholars Program (ISP), formerly known as the AAOS International Surgical Skills Scholarships Program, is a unique learning opportunity for young orthopaedic surgeons from countries with limited education resources. Although the program's name has changed, its mission has not. The ISP is committed to helping international scholars gain the knowledge and skills needed to improve orthopaedic care in their countries and regions.

Serving the Competition
Earlier this year, 1,100 young athletes from 71 countries traveled to Lillehammer, Norway, to participate in the Youth Olympic Games. The elite event is held in staggered summer and winter events and is organized by the International Olympic Committee. At the 2016 winter games, Sonya S. Ahmed, MD, an orthopaedic foot and ankle specialist who practices in San Diego, served as chief medical officer (CMO) for the U.S. team. Dr. Ahmed describes the experience as enjoyable, but taxing.

In Memoriam: Philip D. Wilson Jr, MD
AAOS president in 1972, died peacefully at his home in New York City on June 29. He was 96 years old. Recognized as an educator, leader, and innovator, Dr. Wilson introduced total hip replacement to the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in 1967, and was a founding member of The Hip Society. Dr. Wilson was born in Boston on Feb. 14, 1920, the son of a prominent surgeon. After graduating from Harvard College, he entered the Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons.
