AAOS Releases Choosing Wisely® List
Making decisions about which tests, procedures, or protocols to perform is a process that involves both the patient and the physician. But some physicians understandably struggle to talk about appropriate tests and treatments with their patients—and many patients demand care they might not need.

Message Management: AAOS Style
Getting the orthopaedic message out—to the media, to our members, to patients and the public, and to Congressional and regulatory representatives—is just as important as—and often more difficult than—clearly defining those messages. Although the specifics may change, depending on the issue, the AAOS continually reinforces the following key points: When it comes to the burden of disease, few disorders in medicine can match the impact of musculoskeletal conditions.

Crisis in Syria: An Orthopaedic Surgeon’s Perspective
Since March 2011, Syria has been engulfed in a fierce civil war that has cost more than 100,000 lives and displaced millions. Caught between the opposing forces are people who have lost lives, limbs, homes, and loved ones. As refugees, they risk death, disease, starvation, and homelessness. At home, they risk bullets, shrapnel, or incineration. Some refuse to leave their homes out of principle or because they are too poor or sick to travel.

Call for Entries: Surgeon Story Wall at the 2014 AAOS Annual Meeting
I spend my time as an orthopaedic surgeon helping patients regain mobility and would happily admit that this profession makes me smile. Each member has a distinct story to tell about why he or she chose this particular career path and why it’s so rewarding. For several months, the AAOS has been collecting these unique and vivid portraits through the website ANationInMotion.

Experiencing the “Ultimate Rush” on the Ice
“I can play with anyone on the ice—even people who are twice as big as I am,” said Giselle Tan, MD. “Hockey is a game of speed and skill, not just size and strength.” Dr. Tan, an orthopaedic surgeon who practices in Billings, Mont., spends quite a bit of her free time playing for a team in the recreational leagues at the local ice rink. She may be much shorter and lighter than many of the other players, but the stereotype-busting Dr.

HVO—A Valuable Opportunity for Residents
“¿Qué piensas? (What do you think?)” asked my colleague Dino Aguilar, MD, MBA, as we reviewed the postoperative radiographs of a patient’s tibial shaft fracture. Even though we had struggled to reduce the fracture while using a half-broken C-arm on a nonradiolucent table, I thought the X-rays looked pretty good. My 2-week adventure as a Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) volunteer in Managua, Nicaragua, was off to a good start!
