Choosing Wisely A Good Idea
I was excited to see that the AAOS is playing an active role in the Choosing Wisely Campaign. MED Solutions, where I work as associate medical director, emphasizes cost-saving measures that are saving the healthcare industry millions of dollars. I am looking forward to learning more about the five evidence-based recommendations that the Academy is making. Walter W. Wheelhouse, MD Franklin, Tenn. Misleading advertising?

A Peak Experience
Edward White, MD In 2002, my wife Daria and I traveled to St. Lucia in the West Indies to volunteer. Orthopedics Overseas, part of Health Volunteers Overseas, had a clinical opportunity and the island had the reputation of being a good place for novice volunteers to get their feet wet. I did orthopaedics and Daria, whose background is child counseling, went into some schools to do what she does best: sprinkle fairy dust on children’s spirits. St.

A Standing Call to Action
Today our country is struggling with a poor economy, natural disasters, and a protracted war. But the mountains that we must climb are not fundamentally different from those that prior generations of Americans have encountered and have conquered. Frederick M. Azar, MD We all know that orthopaedic care will be in even greater demand in the future.

A Fat Nation Needs to Be in Motion
S. Terry Canale, MD The AAOS is getting the word out, but a villain—just like the Joker in the Batman movies—is standing in the way, maybe even gaining and winning. That villain is none other than obesity, and what a villain it is! The statistics in this country are profound: From 1960 to 2000, the number of obese individuals in the United States more than doubled. By 2010, more than 78 million U.S.

Looking Forward to a New Home for Orthopaedics
In September 2012, AAOS Now reported that the AAOS Board of Directors had approved plans to move forward with construction of a new orthopaedic headquarters building in Rosemont, Ill. As Joshua J. Perry Initiative Leads the Way to Orthopaedics
Experienced female orthopaedic surgeons who volunteer with the Perry Initiative, a nonprofit organization aimed at recruiting young women to orthopaedic surgery, do not mince words about the potential to succeed. “If anyone tells you that orthopaedics is not a great profession for women, do not listen to them,” advises Mary I. O’Connor, MD, chair of the department of orthopaedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, Fla. “It’s really a fabulous surgical field with lots of opportunities.”

Orthopaedic Trailblazer: Jacquelin Perry, MD, DSc
When Dr. Jenni Buckley and I established our nonprofit organization, we didn’t consider any name other than the Perry Initiative, honoring my mentor and friend, Jacquelin Perry, MD, DSc, who died on March 11, 2013. During her decades-long career, Dr. Perry made immeasurable contributions to orthopaedics through groundbreaking research on the treatment of polio and other disorders and served as a mentor to countless men and women who followed in her footsteps, including me.

How to Make the Most of Every Media Encounter
The AAOS public relations department hosted two media training sessions at the 2013 annual meeting in Chicago. Both sessions were led by one of the world’s leading global public relations firms, Weber Shandwick. Steve Johnson, senior vice president, conducted the training, which provided valuable insight on how orthopaedic surgeons can optimally engage the media to meet key professional goals.
