Readers Like AAOS Now, not Government
The article “Drivers wearing arm slings shouldn’t drive” (AAOS Now, October 2012) was great. I want to give a copy to all my shoulder surgery patients. Charles L. Metzger, MD Bellaire, Texas I very much enjoyed the December 2012 edition of AAOS Now. It was terrific—one of the best. The subjects of importance to our profession heavily outnumbered the “necessary” trivial ones. Augusto Sarmiento, MD Miami, Fla. I just read Dr.

Introducing JAAOS Plus
The Academy’s award-winning review journal—Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (JAAOS)—has been a staple of orthopaedic education for more than 20 years. Whether in print or online, JAAOS articles are excellent references. Many orthopaedic surgeons, however, like nothing better than to “hear” from the experts, to question them, and to challenge their views. Thanks to advances in technology, a new JAAOS initiative is making that interactive education possible.

Are you pulling my (restless) leg?
Boy, is my leg restless today! My legs have been restless since the 1995 AAOS Summer Institute where Kenneth J. Koval, MD; Peter G. Trafton, MD; E. Greer Richardson, MD, and James A. Nunley II, MD, lectured and demonstrated leg operations, while Judy Sherr (who was then an AAOS staff member) cheered them on. It didn’t seem that I needed any of those operations, but my legs just wouldn’t quit moving. I looked like “Mambo Man!” S.

Education Pioneer: William A. Grana, MD
William A. Grana, MD A consensus builder, Dr. Grana constantly sought to expand educational opportunities, whether as an advisor to the U.S. State Department in a program designed to help the Vietnamese run their provincial hospital system or as professor emeritus at UACM with a primary focus on teaching residents and students. “Dr. Grana was a giant in the field of sports medicine and a past president of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine,” said John F.

New Process for Electing AAOS Leaders
Americans can’t vote for president via the Internet yet—but beginning this year, AAOS Fellows can use electronic balloting to vote for AAOS leaders online. The new voting process is an outgrowth of efforts to make the selection of leaders more democratic and transparent, particularly when more than one candidate is proposed for a position. In 2010, an Election Project Team was established to review the voting process for officers of the AAOS.

World-Class Meeting Has International Following
The AAOS Annual Meeting remains the largest orthopaedic educational meeting in the world, and international participation is robust. Nearly one third of physician attendees are from countries outside the United States. They come to learn from the best—and they are eager to participate in the multiple educational opportunities the Annual Meeting affords. It was just 20 years ago that the AAOS Board of Directors established a Task Force on International Initiatives.

The 2012 International Pediatric Orthopaedic Symposium (IPOS) held in Orlando, Fla., included a new orthopaedic surgical simulation contest. The inaugural “Top Gun” competition, developed and presented by the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) and the AAOS, was a timed motor skills accuracy contest for IPOS attendees-in-training.
