To Glucosamine or Not Glucosamine?
I have played tennis against some of the best—in orthopaedics, that is. I have been “aced” by the likes of Crawford, Leach, Wilson, Bigliani, Warner, Herring, Peterson, and Guyton. But today I lost in the first round. I still have the ground strokes, but I just couldn’t move. S. Terry Canale, MD For years I have drawn a little diagram (graph) for my patients. It shows the progression of severity of arthritis compared to the age of the patient (Fig.

Feedback on Practice Management, Mandates, Diversity, and MoM
Practice management for residents I appreciate the recent editorial on teaching residents about practice management in an open minded and realistic manor. About 10 years ago, I started offering “The Business of Medicine” for orthopaedic residents at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). I wanted residents to be better prepared for the real world than I was.

AAOS Now spoke with Dr. Stetson on day four of the Olympics—Tuesday, July 31—about what it is was like to be team physician for these elite athletes. AAOS Now: Before we get into your role as team physician, can you tell us about your own background as a volleyball player? Dr.

Is There a Poodle in the House?
When Steven L. Shapiro, MD, walks into an exam room at his solo orthopaedic practice in Savannah, Ga., an unusual “medical assistant” is often at his side: Amos, Dr. Shapiro’s standard poodle. “Bringing Amos to the office seems to bring a little more humanity and compassion to my interactions with patients,” said Dr. Shapiro, who specializes in foot and ankle surgery. “Sometimes Amos can do things I can’t do, especially when it comes to allaying young patients’ fears,” he added. Dr.

The Communications Cabinet Needs You
For the past 13 years, the Academy has built and donated safe, accessible playgrounds in each of the AAOS Annual Meeting host cities. In 2013, the build will take place at the Faith Community of Saint Sabina in the Auburn-Gresham community of Chicago on Tuesday, March 19. The playground build, in partnership with KaBoom!, provides an opportunity for orthopaedic surgeons, industry, and allied healthcare partners to visibly support playground safety and give something back to the community.

Wanted: Resident Opinions
The Orthopaedic Residents’ Opinion Group (OROG) is a great way to get involved in the AAOS. It’s your opportunity to provide timely feedback for many new programs and issues critical to your professional development. Twice a year, you’ll receive a short, online questionnaire requiring no more than 10 minutes of your time to complete. Your responses will be tabulated with those of other residents to provide insights and commentary on proposed products, hot issues, and programs.
