These are just a few of the comments patients shared with the AAOS as part of a new national public awareness campaign, “A Nation in Motion: One Patient at a Time.”

My New Total Hip Replacement—not MoM

Recently, I had a total hip arthroplasty on my right hip. I picked the orthopaedic surgeon to perform my total hip and allowed him to pick the implant, especially since his results (which I scoped out) were so good. I ended up with a femoral head of oxidized zirconium and a highly cross-linked polyethylene liner—don’t ask me, I don’t know; all I know is that it hasn’t gotten the same kind of press that metal-on-metal (MoM) hip replacements have gotten lately.

From Patient Responsibility to PSAs

Responsibility The discussion of the current guidelines for physician/patient interaction by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) (“Does Patient Responsibility Still Exist?” March) ignores the obstetric role in which ACOG members have an additional responsibility to the unborn child. Surely, that is an important concern in follow-up. Pediatric orthopaedists like myself, who routinely deal with children younger than age 18 years, are in a parallel situation.

AEEF Effort Enlivens, Extends Annual Meeting Learning Experience

The AAOS Poster Enhancement Project, one of several new learning opportunities introduced at the 2012 AAOS Annual Meeting, has brought vitality and longevity to the Academy’s annual display of cutting-edge science posters. Made possible by the AAOS Education Enhancement Fund (AEEF), the project gave presenters the option of adding audio to their posters. Through smartphone technology, many presenters recorded audio commentary.
