Residents Need to “Practice” Management
Several recent articles and survey reports have noted a paucity of practice management material taught during residency training. Surveys of residents and former residents indicate that the recently trained orthopaedist is ill-prepared to face the business aspects of orthopaedic practice, ranging from contracts with partners or the hospital at the beginning of one’s career to the coverage of the “the tail” of liability insurance at the end of the career. Enhancing the Image of Orthopaedic Surgeons
Think about every health-related story on bones and joints that you see on television or in magazines, or hear on the radio. Don’t forget public service announcements and ads (PSAs) that appear on television or radio and in airports across the country. These media opportunities help define the image of orthopaedic surgeons in the eyes of patients and the public.

Readers Respond to Painful Hips and IMGs
Dear Dr. Canale I take exception to two of the comments in your editorial, “My New Total Hip Replacement—not MoM” (AAOS Now, May 2012). First is the contention that only through direct experience can we surgeons understand the conditions we treat. We certainly need to have empathy, but our profession demands that we remain aloof and objective as we attempt to understand and manage the myriad problems that confront us.

OrthoInfo.org: Patients Like It, They Just Don’t Know About It
The emergence and accessibility of the Internet during the past 20 years has put vast amounts of medical information at patients’ fingertips. According to the Pew Internet Project, four out of five Internet users looked for health information online in 2011—and two thirds of them were looking for information on a specific condition. Health information is the third most popular online pursuit (following email and online search engine searches).

Improving OrthoInfo.org
As the article by Drs. Krueger, Kirk, and Stinner notes, more patients are going online for patient information now than ever before. OrthoInfo.org is the largest source of orthopaedic patient information on the web. It is unique in that it is completely peer reviewed; most articles are written by Academy members and reviewed by a specialty section editor and an associate editor. OrthoInfo.
