In the Top 100 classic articles, where’s mine?
In October 2010, The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery—British (JBJS—British) had an article on “The 100 classic papers of ortho-paedic surgery: A bibliometric analysis” and Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research (CORR) published online “The 100 most cited articles in orthopaedic surgery.” I looked at both articles. I quickly ran through the lists. There were articles by Harris and Salter and more Harris, but where were my contributions?

From evidence to e-mail…
I write in response to “Basing Practice on Evidence” by Terry Stanton (October 2010). I write to you prouder than I’ve ever been to be a member of the AAOS. When the Evidence-Based Practice Committee of the AAOS and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery—American jointly developed Levels of Evidence and Grades of Recommendation for orthopaedic surgery, the hope was that these tools would change the practice of orthopaedics.

Take a step in the right direction in 2011
Use free public relations materials to help educate your patients It’s only the beginning of the year, yet many of our calendars are already filling up with consultations and surgeries. As physicians, we have a responsibility to educate our patients. Consequently, many busy AAOS members also add speaking engagements, public presentations, or addresses at community health fairs to their busy calendars.

How effective are you at “Seeing Patients”?
How do you “see” patients in your practice? Do you stereotype them or make assumptions based on their appearance? Are you able to individuate your patients, or do your biases cause you to unconsciously treat some patients differently? Does this make you responsible for some of the clearly documented disparities in health care in our country? And, if so, how can you become aware and make changes to help eliminate disparities?
