A challenging year, filled with opportunities

I know that not every AAOS member has been pleased with the positions we have taken on healthcare reform and other issues. During the year I heard from more than 1,400 of our members and I responded to each one.

AAOS strengthens disclosure policy

New easy-to-use disclosure database, clear guidelines In response to increasing public and governmental scrutiny of the relationships between orthopaedic surgeons and industry, the AAOS is establishing a new disclosure database, which will be rolled out at the 2010 Annual Meeting in New Orleans. The new database is easy to use and incorporates clear definitions of what must be disclosed.

Olympic-trained orthopaedic surgeons combine love of medicine, sports As America’s best athletes head to Vancouver for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, several former Olympians will be among them—as coaches, trainers, and at least one orthopaedic surgeon. Although Eric Heiden, MD, won’t be whirring around the speedskating rink to add to his five gold medals, he will be the team physician for the U.S. speedskating team, as he has been for several years.

ICL Spine returns new and updated

A valued resource for spine surgeons puts emphasis on practical Instructional Course Lectures (ICL) Spine 2, published by the AAOS cooperatively with the North American Spine Society (NASS), is the first specialty volume in the ICL series to be published in a second edition. This new compilation of selected lectures on spine topics presented at AAOS Annual Meetings over the past several years covers 10 major topics in spine surgery and emphasizes practical, clinically relevant information.

Wounded in Action: An Art Exhibition of Orthopaedic Advancements

An exhibit of more than 100 original works of art, Wounded in Action: An Art Exhibition of Orthopaedic Advancements will debut in New Orleans at the AAOS 2010 Annual Meeting. Organized as a tribute to injured troops, their families, and the civilians, medical staff, and orthopaedic surgeons who cared for them, the exhibition thoughtfully considers the sacrifices made in war.
