During a recent virtual AAOS town hall that addressed diversity within AAOS and the profession, the message was that, although progress has been made toward greater inclusiveness of women and underrepresented minorities (URMs), much work remains to be done before the population of orthopaedic surgeons comes to resemble that of society at large.

The Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society (RJOS) instituted the annual “He For She” Award, which recognizes a male orthopaedic surgeon who serves as a strong mentor and sponsor for women in orthopaedics, supporting and empowering females at all stages of their careers to achieve their professional goals. This year, there were 19 nominees.

After a sports medicine doctor fixed Gloria Beim’s knee, I became inspired to become an orthopaedic surgeon. When she shared her plans with the doctor, however, he responded, “Girls are too weak to become orthopaedic surgeons.”
