Hardly a day goes by without news reports about repealing, changing, or modifying the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). It seems that no matter which way the political winds may blow, healthcare providers, including orthopaedic surgeons, will see significant changes in the way care is delivered to patients.

Political, social, and economic changes continue to have significant effects on health policy in the United States, including how orthopaedic surgeons provide musculoskeletal care. The legislative and regulatory policies established in Washington, D.C., will continue to have an impact on the orthopaedic profession and, more importantly, orthopaedic patients, for years to come.
With many health policy challenges on the horizon, it is more important than ever that individuals who understand and care about the future of medicine are elected to public office. Fortunately, physician involvement in politics has grown considerably in recent years. The 114th Congress has 17 physician members, including two orthopaedic surgeons. Many more physicians serve their communities at the state and local level.
