Robust Resident Programming Starts Today

The AAOS 2024 Annual Meeting in San Francisco offers participants the opportunity to experience the latest in orthopaedics, firsthand. Throughout the meeting, attendees at all career stages will witness the exchange of insights, education rooted in the latest practice techniques, state-of-the-art exhibits, and collaboration with a diverse audience of healthcare and industry professionals. Orthopaedic surgery residents can especially benefit from participating in an expansive program developed to meet their unique educational needs and foster a collaborative, fun meeting experience.

Mentorship opportunities
Tuesday’s Peer-to-Peer Mentoring Program is an opportunity for residents to receive insights from the fellowship trail while fostering personal and professional relationships with colleagues from across the country. The event will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Marriott Marquis Meeting Room: Nob Hill A-B. Residents interested in participating are invited to complete a brief matching questionnaire at aaos.org/annual/resident, also accessible on the Annual Meeting Mobile App. The questionnaire allows participants to either request a mentor or volunteer to serve as a mentor.

The Orthopaedic Influencer Series allows residents to get up close and personal with others who have succeeded in ascending within orthopaedics—to learn what it takes to positively cause change in the field through knowledge, position, and authority. The 2024 series will feature three orthopaedic luminaries with sessions on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Check the Annual Meeting Mobile App for information on times and locations.

Speed Mentoring for Residents will be held Wednesday morning from 8 to 9:30 a.m. in South, Room 302. This interactive session will help residents navigate the transition from residency to practicing physician. Residents will have the opportunity to engage and get questions answered by icons in the field as well as young practicing surgeons.

Preparing for practice
Residents can develop their practice-management skills on Tuesday morning at the Essential Coding and Reimbursement for Starting Practice session. The event will be held from 8 to 9:30 a.m. in West, Room 2007. This ticketed session is designed to help residents prepare to begin practice with knowledge and power. Faculty will address the basic elements of CPT, ICD-10, and diagnosis coding.

Taking place later on Tuesday, Practice Management for Residents and Fellows-in-Training is a 4-hour session reviewing the essential elements of practice management. The event will take place from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. in West, Room, 2007. Participants will hear from an impressive lineup of faculty on topics that span billing, personal finance, running your practice, how to choose your first job, negotiating a contract, starting off your practice right, and navigating the legal and workers’ compensation aspects of orthopaedic practice.

The Forum for Young Orthopaedic Surgeons with the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in South, Room 302. The event offers attendees the chance to meet with ABOS Associate Executive Director Michael Bednar, MD, FAAOS, to learn critical information about Board requirements and procedures.

Impact and advance residency education
The Resident Assembly (RA) is an advisory body to AAOS on issues of importance to orthopaedic residents. In addition, the RA provides a forum for orthopaedic residents to embrace their roles as patient advocates and lifelong learners. The RA is an integral and meaningful part of AAOS and is comprised of all orthopaedic surgery residents and fellows-in-training who are pursuing ABOS, American Osteopathic Board of Orthopedic Surgery, or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certifications in the United States or Canada.

The RA Business Meeting will take place Wednesday afternoon, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., in South, Room 302. Attend the meeting to hear updates on the 2024 initiatives and vote for the new members-at-large of the RA Executive Committee.

Dive into AI at the Resident Education Forum
Are you ready to explore the cutting edge of orthopaedic innovation? The Resident Education and Innovation Committees are proud to present an enlightening session, titled “AI in Orthopaedics: How We Got Here and Where We Are Going.” Attend this groundbreaking symposium on artificial intelligence (AI) in orthopaedics, taking place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday in West, Room 2008. This year’s symposium promises an engaging panel discussion, delving into audience questions and providing insights into the future of AI in the field. Snacks and refreshments will be provided to fuel your curiosity.

Friendly competition at Resident Bowl
Returning for its seventh year due to popular demand, the AAOS Resident Bowl will close out the afternoon on Wednesday from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in West, Room 3018. Residents are invited to compete on teams in a game-style setting, answering orthopaedic and non-orthopaedic trivia for grand and runner-up prizes. All Annual Meeting attendees are welcome to be in the audience. Sign up for a team today at aaos.org/annual/resident. Complimentary food and beverages will be served.
