Evolution: AAOS Leadership Institute Is Designed to Develop Next Generation of Volunteer Leaders

As part of its ongoing commitment to evolve the culture and governance of its Board and volunteer structure, AAOS developed an exclusive program, the AAOS Leadership Institute (ALI), which provides members with training, mentoring, and networking opportunities to help them acquire and enhance the key skills needed to succeed as a volunteer leader at AAOS.

Participation equips each participant with the essential tools and insights for effective governance within AAOS’ organization. Completion of each level will become a mandatory requirement for serving in governance positions in the near future. Available in four successive tiers, ALI provides a clear pathway for members seeking high levels of leadership within AAOS. Levels 1 and 2 orient members into the Academy’s culture and resources and prepare them for AAOS committee service. These early levels are primarily online learning modules, webinars, and informal mentoring that can be completed at any pace.

Levels 3 and 4 are available through an application process for members who aspire to serve as a committee or council chair or on the AAOS Board of Directors. Level 3 focuses on providing members with the knowledge and skills that are critical to becoming a strong AAOS council or committee chair. In addition to online learning modules and webinars, participants benefit from formal one-to-one mentoring with a longstanding AAOS volunteer leader. Level 4 is designed for innovative leaders who aspire to the highest levels of AAOS governance. Highlights of Level 4 include advanced coaching and mentoring along with a personalized program tailored to the development areas most important to each member’s personal growth.
