University of Missouri, Kansas City Named Champion at 2024 AAOS Resident Bowl

The AAOS Resident Bowl, the popular resident trivia competition, took place on Wednesday, Feb. 14, at the AAOS 2024 Annual Meeting in San Francisco. The stakes were high for the participating residency programs to show off knowledge in front of a standing-room-only crowd (which included many of their program chairs). Sixteen teams battled it out in a quiz-bowl format mixing orthopaedic and pop culture (while enjoying food and beverages). The 2024 AAOS Resident Bowl was sponsored by 3M Healthcare.

This year’s event was hosted by Jaime Lyn Bellamy, DO, FAAOS, and John Tokish, MD, FAAOS. The first four rounds had 10 questions each, covering a range of topics, including orthopaedics, orthopaedic history, and general non-orthopaedic trivia. Teams responded via tablet and were scored on both the correct answer and the speed at which they answered correctly.

Last fall, the qualifying Resident Rumble virtual competition took place, producing four weekly game winners. Three of the four Resident Rumble winners participated live at the Resident Bowl in San Francisco and were recognized at the event for their achievements.

Final round and victors
The final round of the Resident Bowl had the two top-scoring teams take the stage, and they were asked only five questions. After a fierce final round, University of Missouri, Kansas City was crowned the winner—a second major championship for Kansas City that week.

The 2024 Resident Bowl winning and runner-up teams were:

  • First place: University of Missouri, Kansas City—Andrew Watkins, MD; Garrett Mitchell, MD; Sheena Amin, MD; LeiLani Mansy, MD; and Michael Held, MD
  • Second place: Kettering Health Network/Grandview Medical Center—Naem Mufarreh, DO, MS; Jaron Lohmeyer, DO; Samuel Shine, DO; and Zach Thomas, DO

When asked about his thoughts on winning the 2024 Resident Bowl, Dr. Watkins, of the University of Missouri, said, “Feels amazing, top of the world. Kansas City just won the Super Bowl, now we won the Resident Bowl. So we appreciate AAOS for putting on the Resident Bowl, glad we were given the opportunity to be here by our program. Happy to represent our program and get the victory.”

The Resident Bowl will return in San Diego
The Resident Bowl will be back at the AAOS 2025 Annual Meeting in San Diego. For residents interested in trivia events outside of the Annual Meeting, the virtual Resident Rumble competition kicked off in April. The champion will again receive recognition at the Resident Bowl if they attend the Annual Meeting in San Diego in March 2025 along with other prizes. Residency programs can stay in the loop at aaos.org/residentrumble or email ResidentNews@aaos.org for more information.
