Joel L. Mayerson, MD, Named Chair of BOC

Ohio orthopaedic surgeon Joel L. Mayerson, MD, FAAOS, will serve as chair of the AAOS Board of Councilors. Recognized as an inventor, researcher, and leader in orthopaedic oncology, he assumed the position following the AAOS 2024 Annual Meeting.

Dr. Mayerson is professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Ohio State University (OSU) College of Medicine in Columbus. Since 2009, he has held leadership positions at the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, where he is currently associate chief medical officer, medical director of surgical services, and medical director of sarcoma services.

Dr. Mayerson’s research focuses on postsurgical patient outcomes and innovative surgical techniques that improve care. Among his scientific contributions that have changed care is a percutaneous drug regimen for aneurysmal bone cysts. Dr. Mayerson has authored more than 140 journal articles and book chapters and given more than 125 presentations around the world.

An active AAOS volunteer leader for two decades, Dr. Mayerson has helped shape the orthopaedic profession. He was a member of the Board of Specialty Societies, Research and Quality Council, Musculoskeletal Oncology Content Committee, and Committee on Healthcare Safety, in addition to other roles.

His drive for excellence and growth in the specialty is also reflected in his roles with other organizations. Dr. Mayerson is past president of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society and led the transition for the society to oversee the accreditation and match process for orthopaedic oncology fellowships in North America. His leadership as president of the Ohio Orthopaedic Society (2021–2022) resulted in more than 40 percent membership growth during his term. In 2020, he was inducted into the Mazzaferri-Ellison Society of Master Clinicians, a peer-nominated honor society at OSU recognizing “master clinicians who excel in clinical practice, clinical teaching, mentoring, professionalism, and service.” He is also among the top 10 percent of orthopaedic surgeons elected to membership in the American Orthopaedic Association.

Dr. Mayerson earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Toledo and medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. He completed surgical residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and fellowship in adult and pediatric orthopaedic oncology at the University of Washington in Seattle.
