AAOS Board Takes Professional Compliance Action

At its meeting on Sept. 17, 2023, the Board of Directors of the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) considered the following compliance matter not related to the AAOS Standards of Professionalism and took the action indicated.

Michael A. Banks, MD
Middleburg Heights, Ohio
Expelled

In March 2023, the State Medical Board of Ohio entered an order which permanently revoked Dr. Banks’ license to practice medicine. The action was based on the Report and Recommendation (Report) of the State Medical Board Hearing Examiner. The Report outlined that Dr. Banks groomed a then-17-year-old hospital volunteer to take explicit photographs and send them to him, and that he also engaged in repeated sexual activity with her. The Report found that he used his position to gain trust and that he engaged in “premeditated, reprehensible conduct that harmed a vulnerable 17-year-old girl.” The recommendation of a permanent revocation was confirmed by the Medical Board.

The AAOS Board of Directors voted to expel Dr. Banks.
