A New Era Begins: OrthoPAC’s Success Will Shape Healthcare Advocacy in 119th Congress

The 2024 election has fundamentally reshaped America’s political landscape, ushering in a new chapter with Donald Trump returning to the presidency and Republicans securing control of both the House and Senate. In this pivotal moment of change, the Political Action Committee of the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons (OrthoPAC)—the only PAC dedicated exclusively to advancing orthopaedic interests—has achieved unprecedented success.

 

The numbers tell a compelling story: OrthoPAC achieved a remarkable 97 percent overall win rate among OrthoPAC-supported candidates, investing more than $1.8 million in support of candidates who understand the challenges facing our profession. This thoughtfully balanced approach—supporting Democrats and Republicans in a 45 percent/55 percent split—reflects OrthoPAC’s fundamental belief that good healthcare policy transcends party lines and requires engagement across the political spectrum.

 

The remarkable success rates behind OrthoPAC’s election efforts showcase the strength of its strategic investments. In the House races, OrthoPAC achieved an exceptional 99 percent success rate, helping elect 98 Republican and 88 Democratic candidates who understand the importance of sound healthcare policy. The Senate story is also impressive, with a 93 percent success rate among candidates supported by OrthoPAC. These are not just statistics—they represent relationships built and voices heard in the halls of Congress.

 

Particularly noteworthy is OrthoPAC’s targeted support of healthcare professionals seeking office. By backing four of the five physicians newly joining Congress, OrthoPAC has helped ensure that healthcare discussions will benefit from real-world medical expertise. The success of Herb Conaway, MD (New Jersey); Kelly Morrison, MD (Minnesota); Maxine Dexter, MD (Oregon); and Mike Kennedy, MD (Utah), represents a significant victory for evidence-based healthcare policymaking.

 

The halls of Congress will look notably different when the 119th session convenes. More than 60 new faces will join the House of Representatives, with 29 Democrats and 25 Republicans already confirmed among the newcomers. The Senate’s transformation is also significant, welcoming at least 10 new members—a dramatic refresh of more than 10 percent of the chamber. For the medical community, this election brings particularly encouraging news: The five new physicians joining the House will strengthen the crucial medical perspective in congressional deliberations.

 

The incoming Trump administration has already signaled its intent to reshape the healthcare landscape significantly. Early indicators suggest plans to modify the Affordable Care Act, though details remain to be seen. The administration’s likely emphasis on Medicare Advantage programs and the planned role of Robert F. Kennedy Jr in shaping public health policy underscore the importance of having strong, informed voices representing medical professionals in policy discussions.

 

Looking toward the 119th Congress, the AAOS Office of Government Relations (OGR) and OrthoPAC are positioned to build on their electoral momentum. Their bipartisan approach has already yielded significant victories in key areas, such as Medicare payment reform, improvements to prior authorization, and reduced restrictions on physician-led hospitals. These achievements demonstrate the effectiveness of working across party lines to advance policies that benefit both medical professionals and patients.

 

The campaign season may be over, but OrthoPAC’s work continues. With fundraising extending through Dec. 31 and beyond, OrthoPAC is focused on rebuilding its resources to effectively engage with and educate the new Congress. The significant influx of new members means there is both an opportunity and an obligation to ensure they understand the critical issues facing orthopaedic surgeons and their patients.
