Supporting New Investigators for 60 years

OREF president reflects on his presidency and the Foundation’s future

As I complete my term as president of the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF), I am excited to see how far the organization has come in its efforts to refocus its primary mission. I have witnessed incredible energy, passion, and dedication from both trustees and staff as we worked to advance the field of orthopaedic practice through our support of research and new investigators, and in collaboration with our orthopaedic partners.

The grants funded by OREF since its founding 60 years ago have allowed all of us to work in the most dynamic field of medicine, benefiting from the tremendous continual improvement and innovation that starts with research and that enables us to improve the lives of our patients with musculoskeletal conditions. The work OREF is doing today and the research it is funding help to ensure that our specialty will remain at the forefront of medicine and patient care far into the future.

In the past 2 years, OREF has broken new ground with its Collaborative Research Agenda (CRA), which brings together multiple stakeholders including orthopaedic surgeons, investigators, specialty societies, and industry to identify and fund the most critically needed research. In 2015, the first grant supported by the CRA program was awarded to Thomas Fehring, MD, for clinical research on the diagnosis, treatment, and/or prevention of infection in total joint arthroplasty of the hip and knee. The grant provides $500,000 over 3 years and was funded by OREF, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, the Hip Society, the Knee Society, Zimmer, DePuy Synthes Joint Reconstruction, and Biomet. Additional CRA topics include stem cell, sports medicine, and trauma research.

OREF’s successful Mentor Campaigns, which honor respected orthopaedic surgeons, have raised more than $1 million for research. Your response to our first two campaigns, honoring James R. Andrews, MD, and Russell F. Warren, MD, was tremendous. I expect the same outpouring of support as we launch our 2016 campaigns honoring Jorge Galante, MD, and James R. Urbaniak, MD.

These campaigns, along with your support of the OREF Annual Fund, provide wonderful opportunities for all of us to become champions not only of OREF but of our patients and the incredible field of orthopaedics. I encourage you to learn more about these programs and how they make a real difference for researchers, surgeons, and the patients their work may one day help.

Be sure to stop by the OREF booth in Academy Hall C for more information about supporting research through OREF, including how you can become a Sustaining Order of Merit or Visionary Research Society member, and don’t miss your chance to enter our 60th Anniversary Sweepstakes! We’re giving away a 2-year lease on a 2016 Jaguar or Land Rover!
