Revision Achilles Tendon Repair Utilizing Posterior Tibial Tendon Allograft and Flexor Hallucis Longus Transfer

Achilles tendon ruptures are common injuries encountered by orthopaedic surgeons. Myriad of surgical treatment options have been used to manage Achilles tendon ruptures; however, currently, no preferred treatment option exists. Re-rupture of the Achilles tendon occurs in 1.7% to 5.6% of patients, and no direct relationship has been demonstrated between complications and repair techniques used. The goal of this technique is to provide a method for fixation in patients with an Achilles tendon re-rupture that provides a stable repair construct and mitigates the potential sequela of re-rupture. This video describes the management of an Achilles tendon re-rupture via flexor hallucis longus tendon transfer and a posterior tibial tendon allograft for repair of an 8.5-cm tendon gap.
