All-Arthroscopic Brostrom Lateral Ligament Repair
Lateral ligament sprains are common injuries that can contribute to the development of chronic ankle instability. Chronic ankle instability (CAI) may result in repetitive sprains, chronic pain, and functional limitations. Multiple surgical interventions are available to treat CAI, with the most commonly used technique being the Brostrom-Gould. This video presents an all-arthroscopic approach of the Brostrom-Gould technique, which is a relatively new alternative to the traditionally open Brostrom procedure. Patient outcome studies of the arthroscopic Brostrom procedure have been few but have demonstrated no significant differences when compared with the outcomes of patients treated with open Brostrom. The patient presented in this video is a 33-year-old man with a diagnosis of CAI. This video presents a systematic outline of the arthroscopic Brostrom technique, including indications and contraindications, preoperative planning, surgical technique, potential complications, and postoperative rehabilitation.
