Hemipelvectomy Due to Recurrent Chondrosarcoma

This surgical video demonstrates a hemipelvectomy due to a recurrent chondrosarcoma arising in the area around a previous total hip arthroplasty. The video discusses the case of a 73-year-old woman who had pain in the area of her proximal femoral prosthesis. The patient had a significant medical history of chondrosarcoma developing around a total hip arthroplasty that was resected; in addition, her history included hypertension, deep vein thrombosis, diabetes mellitus, and atrial fibrillation. Radiographs and MRIs demonstrated a large soft-tissue mass in the area around her hip prosthesis. CT-guided biopsy revealed a low- to intermediate-grade chondrosarcoma. Given the nature of the recurrence and the discovery of a local metastasis to the ilium, she underwent a hemipelvectomy and amputation.
