Cortical Bone Trajectory Technique for Posterior Spinal Instrumentation
Instrumented posterior spinal fusion in the lumbar spine may be compromised by poor bone quality. The cortical bone trajectory (CBT) for pedicle screw placement is a novel technique that may improve fixation by traversing a pathway with greater amounts of cortical bone. This technique is useful for posterior instrumentation in all patients, especially in those with osteopenia. The technique focuses on maximizing screw pullout strength while minimizing surgical exposure.
