Achilles Tendon Repair Using the Modified Giftbox Technique

Achilles tendon tears are common injuries in athletically active individuals. In the active patient population, surgical repair often is preferred over nonsurgical treatment because of earlier return to sports activity. Multiple open and percutaneous techniques have been described for Achilles tendon repair. This video introduces the modified giftbox technique for Achilles tendon repair, which involves the use of nonabsorbable suture loops. In our series of patients, this technique was associated with results comparable with those of the traditional Krackow suture repair technique and percutaneous repair techniques, with no re-tears occurring to date. Potential advantages of this technique include tubularizing frayed tendon edges and creating suture tunnels, which decrease the risk of severing repair suture during suture passage.
