Lateral, Semilunar Incision for Prepatellar Bursectomy: A New Surgical Technique

This video demonstrates a novel technique for the management of chronic prepatellar bursitis in patients with repetitive trauma from kneeling. Concomitant fluid collection from repetitive trauma causes the skin and overlying soft tissue to expand. These patients may require surgical treatment to remove fluid and débride chronic fibrous tissue in the bursa. Traditional midline or transverse incisions do not address excess soft tissue, making wound healing a challenge. A lateral, semilunar incision allows for the removal of excess tissue and does not interfere with kneeling or direct pressure. A quilting technique is used to prevent recurrent fluid accumulation.
