Patellar Tendon Repair via Transosseous Sutures and Suture Anchor Augmentation
Acute patellar tendon ruptures are repaired via different techniques, depending on tear location and surgeon preference. Surgical repair is indicated in ambulatory patients with a complete acute rupture who can tolerate anesthesia. Repair options for patellar tendon rupture include transosseous suture fixation, suture anchor fixation, or cortical button fixation. Many studies advocate for augmentation of the repair with the use of allograft or autograft tendon, cerclage wires, or suture anchors. Several small case series have reported good clinical outcomes after repair of acute ruptures; however, studies comparing clinical results of various repair or augmentation techniques are lacking. Biomechanical studies suggest that augmentation techniques may protect the repair by adding stability to the construct. This video demonstrates repair of a proximal patellar tendon avulsion via transosseous suture repair and suture anchor augmentation.
